Robert J and Sydneynick are correct - I've dabbled a bit in jewellery making as well and am very familiar with many of the artisan goldsmith shops in Florence.I would definitely say buying directly from the goldsmiths rather than simply jewellery shops is a rewarding experience - you're supporting local artisans, you can watch them making your jewellery and you get a more reasonable price.

Re: Gold jewelry at a good price. The shops on the bridge are really Florence's most expensive jewellery shops. There is a lovely family run goldsmith studio just near the bridge on Via Lambertesca (no. 12 red) called Oro Due. They handmake everything right there in the shop and are very reasonably priced, not to mention lovely people.
